Tegucigalpa's Historic Churches
Within walking distance of our Hotel in Tegucigalpa, we have several very old historic sites which include our Churches.
Spanish conquistadores always built strong forts and architecturaly attractive churches, both large and small. The Catholic Faith was a very strong part of the colonizing of the Americas, from Saint Augustine, Florida the oldest city in North America, all the way down the continent, to the tip of South America, the Spaniards left their cultural and artistic edifications. Honduras is right in the middle of the conquistadores map, and many of their original constructions still stand, awaiting your visit centuries later.
Recently renovated is "Iglesia de La Merced", a colonial church built in 1654 at the Plaza La Merced, with a unique type of woodwork of Islamic origin (Islam ruled Spain for hundreds of years, and it shows in their architecture), with the interior decorated with colonial artifacts.
"Iglesia de Los Dolores" one of the first Catholic temples, was built in 1579, legends state that the first Spanish to arrive in Tegucigalpa based their camps in this area, this Church is unique among others of it's kind.
"Iglesia Inmaculada Concepcion", tall and impressive Spanish colonial building, similar design to many seen in Brasil, this Church is noted for it's beautifull ceilings. Bring your camera !
